On 2 May 2025, The Moral, Civic and National Education Committee and the Geography Department participated in an agricultural experience workshop in Ho Pui Tsuen, Yuen Long, organised by the NGO Yan Oi Tong, to have hands-on experiences on farming and conduct field study on the agricultural industry.
During the farming activity, participants utilised traditional farming tools to clear and plough a vacant farmland. This teaches students the hard-work and discomfort required and endured by farmers on a daily basis, so that they can gain a deeper understanding and connection on the origins of food as well as the importance of protecting the natural environment.
During the field study, Geography students utilised what they have learnt in class to discuss the impact of urban sprawl on the local agricultural industry, as well as the importance of achieving sustainable development through measures such as urban-rural integration. Through this activity, students were able to connect theories with practice. This helped them confirm the validity of the knowledge mentioned by their textbooks.
The activity enabled students to realise, agriculture is not only an industry, but also a social connection between people and the land. Let us hope that this reverence towards the earth could be translated into action to support our local agriculture!
