Our school's External Affairs Committee, in collaboration with the Astronomy Club, organized a cultural exchange tour to Spain during the summer holiday from 6th to 16th August 2026. Led by Ms. Li Si Yan and Mr. Chan Chak Fai, 20 students from Forms 1 to 5 embarked on an enriching journey to gain deep insights into Spain's history and culture, broaden their global horizons, and witness a spectacular natural wonder, a total solar eclipse, on August 12, 2026.

 

Combining astronomical observation with cultural exploration, the tour featured a comprehensive itinerary across four main Spanish cities: Madrid, Segovia, Burgos, and Barcelona. Students visited renowned landmarks, including the Prado Museum, the historic city of Toledo and Toledo Cathedral, the Royal Palace of Madrid, Las Ventas Bullring, Mercado de San Miguel, the Aqueduct of Segovia, the Alcázar of Segovia, Burgos Cathedral, the Museum of Human Evolution, the Cathedral-Basilica of Our Lady of the Pillar, Montserrat Abbey, the Barcelona Science Museum, Fabra Observatory, and the Sagrada Familia. In addition, they enjoyed a famous Flamenco dance performance over dinner, immersing themselves in local history and customs.

 

A major highlight of the trip was the successful observation of the total solar eclipse in Zaragoza on August 12. Prior to the tour, students conducted in-depth research into the scientific principles of total solar eclipses, selecting their observation location and timing. Equipped with solar filters and astronomical telescopes, they closely observed the details of the phenomenon during the moment of totality. The students also exchanged insights with local astronomy enthusiasts. Everyone expressed that this extraordinary phenomenon was an unforgettable, once-in-a-lifetime experience that sparked a deeper passion for astronomy.

 

The tour successfully broadened our students' international perspectives while fostering a stronger interest in and understanding of natural sciences. Both teachers and students found the journey profoundly rewarding.
